If you are experiencing problems in extracting a Zip file, there are some tools that can help you access it to the point where data can be recovered. Here we will list 8 programs to repair or open the corrupted Zip file so you can extract it.

The PowerArchiver repair Zip window can be opened from the Tools menu/ribbon or just press Ctrl+R (in Classic mode). The Repair Zip Archive dialog box will open and you can click on the folder icon to browse for the corrupted Zip file that you want to repair. Click the Start button to start fixing. The fixed Zip file will be saved under the same file name with an additional _PAFixed.

Open ALZip and go to Action > Restore Archive (F11). Select the Zip file, leave the restored archive name and it will default to adding .repair to the original file name. For ease of use, make sure the file type to be restored and archive to be compressed are both ZIP. The restoration complete window offers to email the new archive, copy the files or error check the new archive.

We did also try some other archivers which are not included in the main list. WinZip trial works but it requires installing the companion command line version as well. IZArc includes a repair Zip option but when we tried on several test files, it produced nothing but corrupt recovery archives. Another popular archiver, Peazip, was unable to open most of our test files.

We also briefly ran a second test with a single 1.6MB PNG image inside a Zip archive and zeroed the first and last 5KB. In this scenario, none of the tools managed to repair the archive or recover any data.

If your corrupted ZIP archive is from a download, a transfer error during the download process might have corrupted it. Try downloading the archive again. Select to download the same software from a different website source if you can before proceeding with repair methods.

In the case of file sharing via email, you could try asking a person who shared an archive with you to send it again. Ask the person who shared it to set up a new ZIP archive from scratch that contains the same files and send it again. Then you may not need to repair the original ZIP.

There are plenty of third-party ZIP repair software packages available for Windows platforms. DiskInternals ZIP Repair is a freeware utility that helps users extract content from corrupted archives. This is how you can fix corrupted archives with that software:

It also could have been damaged during creation due to hardware failures (usually caused by an overclocked CPU or unreliable memory). In the latter case the recovery record will not help. The only way to detect if the repair will help is to try to apply the repair command to the archive and test the results.

DataNumen Zip Repair is the best FREE Zip repair and recovery tool in the world. It can repair the corrupt Zip files and recover as much of your data as possible, thereby minimizing the loss in file corruption. Recovery rate is the most important criterion of a zip recovery product. Based on our comprehensive tests, DataNumen Zip Repair has the best recovery rate, much more better than any other competitors, including WinRAR and other zip repair tools, in the market!

Another scenario involves a drive-level failure, such as a compromised file system or drive partition, or a hard disk drive failure. In any of these cases, the data is not easily read from the media devices. Depending on the situation, solutions involve repairing the logical file system, partition table, or master boot record, or updating the firmware or drive recovery techniques ranging from software-based recovery of corrupted data, to hardware- and software-based recovery of damaged service areas (also known as the hard disk drive's "firmware"), to hardware replacement on a physically damaged drive which allows for the extraction of data to a new drive. If a drive recovery is necessary, the drive itself has typically failed permanently, and the focus is rather on a one-time recovery, salvaging whatever data can be read.

Of course, there are exceptions to this, such as cases where severe damage to the hard drive platters may have occurred. However, if the hard drive can be repaired and a full image or clone created, then the logical file structure can be rebuilt in most instances.

Most physical damage cannot be repaired by end users. For example, opening a hard disk drive in a normal environment can allow airborne dust to settle on the platter and become caught between the platter and the read/write head. During normal operation, read/write heads float 3 to 6 nanometers above the platter surface, and the average dust particles found in a normal environment are typically around 30,000 nanometers in diameter.[6] When these dust particles get caught between the read/write heads and the platter, they can cause new head crashes that further damage the platter and thus compromise the recovery process. Furthermore, end users generally do not have the hardware or technical expertise required to make these repairs. Consequently, data recovery companies are often employed to salvage important data with the more reputable ones using class 100 dust- and static-free cleanrooms.[7]

Recovering data from physically damaged hardware can involve multiple techniques. Some damage can be repaired by replacing parts in the hard disk. This alone may make the disk usable, but there may still be logical damage. A specialized disk-imaging procedure is used to recover every readable bit from the surface. Once this image is acquired and saved on a reliable medium, the image can be safely analyzed for logical damage and will possibly allow much of the original file system to be reconstructed.

In some cases, data on a hard disk drive can be unreadable due to damage to the partition table or file system, or to (intermittent) media errors. In the majority of these cases, at least a portion of the original data can be recovered by repairing the damaged partition table or file system using specialized data recovery software such as Testdisk; software like ddrescue can image media despite intermittent errors, and image raw data when there is partition table or file system damage. This type of data recovery can be performed by people without expertise in drive hardware as it requires no special physical equipment or access to platters.

The Windows operating system can be reinstalled on a computer that is already licensed for it. The reinstallation can be done by downloading the operating system or by using a "restore disk" provided by the computer manufacturer. Eric Lundgren was fined and sentenced to U.S. federal prison in April 2018 for producing 28,000 restore disks and intending to distribute them for about 25 cents each as a convenience to computer repair shops.[21]

Having to repair a corrupted or damaged zip folder can be a pain. Most of the zip folder repair tools out there that actually work can be a bit on the expensive side. However, there are a few free tools that will work as well, some of which you may already have downloaded and installed on your computer.

Since WinZip became a universal Windows 10 app back in 2016, it has been the first stop, go-to app for ZIP file extraction. Coupled with the Command Prompt, you can use it the repair any invalid ZIP file. 2ff7e9595c
